         SONGS ABOUT NEWCASTLE UNITED,

              THE GRAFFITI ON ITS STREETS

                  AND OTHER STUFF

SONG ONE     DAD AND ME GO TO THE MATCH

When I was 16 my dad started to take me to Newcastle United Football matches. His job involved calling on a weekly basis to collect householders insurance here in Newcastle upon Tyne. It's all done by direct debit now! Daisy Hill in Wallsend was Saturdays collecting place and my part in it was to help by calling down one side of the street while Dad did the other. This way we could set off for the home matches at St James Park by 1pm to get there just before ko at 3pm! The people were always friendly in DH and those Saturdays were one of the highlights of my youth. The stadium was not the vast creation it is now but it still seemed awfully big. We always approached it through Leazes Park, the building looming larger as we made our way around the artificial lake towards it. The atmosphere was always infectious at the match and I soon grew to love going. Here is 'St James Park Roar' about the stadium and the emotion involved in just being there. Whether it was Arsenal, Sunderland, Aston Villa or Stoke it did not matter, we seemed INVINCIBLE at home then! Hear the roar!

(Way yer knar!)

SONG TWO  HEROICS BY HEROES ON THE PITCH

Within two years of going to my first game we won the Intercities Fairs Cup in 1969, beating a host of European teams such as Rangers of Scotland, Feyenoord of Rotterdam, Sporting Club of Portugal, Real Zaragoza of Spain, Vitória de Setúbal of Portugal before destroying the highly rated Újpest Football Club of Hungary in the final. Újpest had disposed of Don Revies Leeds FC in the prev round!(I will write a song about the Lads victory in the Fairs Cup someday not too far away!) Dad and I watched heroes such as wyn davies (wyn the leap), pop robson, alan foggon, david craig and captain bobby moncur who got 3 goals in the two legged final to defeat Újpest on their home turf. Whether you are a blue, red n white, green hooped or red football fan, Newcastle fans will always be 'Black and White or Dead' Cue for the...
